How to Fix a Leaking Air Conditioner
Using an air conditioner provides a lot of convenience in life, helping the whole family cope with the scorching heat of summer. However, when the air conditioner malfunctions, it can cause quite a bit of trouble, one of which is a leaking air conditioner.
So, what are the causes of this, and how can this situation be resolved?
1. Blocked Drainpipe
When the air conditioner operates normally, condensation forms on the evaporator coil and is drained outside through a drainage pipe. However, since this is a water drainage path, it can become clogged over time, especially if algae and mold start to grow, causing the pipe to become obstructed. This can lead to a situation where water accumulates in the drip pan and overflows.
To address this issue, you need to unclog the drain by spraying and blowing through the inside of the pipe, or use a high-pressure pump to flush out the debris.
2. Cracked Drainpipe
Another possible cause of a leaking air conditioner is a cracked drain pipe. If this is the reason for your air conditioner leaking, you should replace the damaged drain pipe of the air conditioner. It's advisable to contact the warranty center for an inspection and repair.
3. Installation Errors
Incorrectly installed drain pipes without proper slopes can cause water to flow back into the drip pan, leading to overflows. Poor insulation of copper pipes behind the air conditioner can cause condensation to form and water to drip.
If the air conditioner is installed at an angle, the drip pan can tilt, causing water to flow to the low end and leak onto the wall or floor. In this case, you should seek help from a technician to adjust the position of the drain pipe to prevent water leakage
4. Low refrigerant levels
A low refrigerant level in the air conditioner can lead to ice buildup on the evaporator coil, one of the causes of water leakage. If this is the case, you should contact the warranty center to inspect the unit and address the refrigerant issue.
5. Lack of Regular MaintenanceWith continuous operation over time, dust and dirt can accumulate on the evaporator coil, leading to water leakage. To prevent this, you should remove the filter and clean it by rinsing with a hose, then letting it dry before reinstalling it. This should be done every two weeks.
Note: Do not use water above 40°C to rinse and dry the filter, as hot water and a dryer can deform or damage the filter. For stubborn dirt, you can use diluted dishwashing detergent to clean the filter. To prevent air conditioner leakage, it's recommended to perform air conditioner maintenance every 3-6 months, depending on usage frequency.
For smart air conditioners, such as Mitsubishi Electric air conditioners, you can perform the cleaning yourself at home in four simple steps without the need for specialized tools. Cleaning can help your air conditioner operate efficiently and save energy. Specifically, cleaning can lead to energy savings of up to 45% compared to an uncleaned unit.
Mitsubishi Electric air conditioners also come with a warranty of up to 2 years for the entire unit and up to 5 years for the compressor at warranty centers nationwide.
